The following core courses are required:
Art 205, Art Since 1945 (3 units)
Art 206, Art Theory and Criticism (3 units)

First Year Exhibitions in the Witt Gallery
The graduate student is required to have one exhibition in the Witt Gallery in the second semester of her/his graduate study. A yearly schedule for first year graduate shows in the Witt Gallery is prepared by the Graduate Coordinator/s in consultation with the Chair of the Gallery Committee
Exhibitions in the Else Gallery
The graduate student is required to have one exhibition in the Else Gallery during the semester of his/her final review. Note: only in rare cases does the exhibition and final review happen concurrently. For most candidates a final show will be scheduled for another time during the semester, with a final review in ASL during the graduate critique period. A yearly schedule for graduate shows in the Else Gallery is prepared by the Graduate Coordinator/s in consultation with the Chair of the Gallery Committee
The required exhibition normally held in the Else Gallery may be held off-campus. Please notify the Graduate Coordinator of alternative exhibition sites in a timely manner. Both exhibition and final review are mandatory. Failure to comply with the above result in either a postponement of final reviews and/or a postponement of graduation.
500 Culminating Experience (Thesis Project)
In the final semester, the student mounts an exhibition of studio work and submits a written component for ART 500, Culminating Experience, that is intended to articulate an understanding of the student’s considered aesthetic stance. It must evidence originality and independent thinking, appropriate form and organization, and a rationale. Art 500 is taken with the student’s advisor. In writing the thesis the candidate may consider how art history, criticism, and theory relate to their studio work. Two signatures are required for the written report, that of the advisor and the Graduate Coordinator/s. The advisor is responsible for the content, and the Graduate Coordinator/s is responsible for the required format. Please refer to Office of Graduate Studies thesis guidelines: http://www.csus.edu/gradstudies/Thesis.htm
Registration for Culminating Requirements
Enrollment in these units is by department permission only. A student wishing to enroll in Culminating Requirement units must have an approved Advancement to Candidacy form on file with the Office of Graduate Studies. Registration fees should be paid during the priority registration period to avoid the late fee. Students should then file the necessary paperwork with their department to have the units added.
