Welcome New Students

Whether or not you attended one of the orientation workshops during the summer, you will want to sign up for an advising appointment with a member of the full-time faculty in Art after the start of the Fall semester (their names, offices, and contact information are listed in the "Full-time Faculty" section of the Art website). If you are transferring to Sacramento State from a community college, you may need to discuss which of your previous art courses can be used toward the BA degree in Art.

All undergraduate Art majors are required to meet with an Art faculty advisor at least twice before they graduate from Sacramento State, and are encouraged to do so more often. Faculty advisors are assigned to students by the Art Department, but any student also has the option of selecting an advisor from the full-time faculty. Please speak to Sherry Arrowood in the Art Department office if you wish to have a particular faculty member as your advisor.

Art students who would like to schedule a portfolio review with a member of the Art faculty should contact the Art Department during either the Spring or Fall semester. Portfolio reviews are not required for admission to the Art major, but they can help a student assess his or her preparation for enrollment in Studio Art classes. In some cases, a lower division requirement (such as ART 20A, Beginning Drawing) may be waived if the student can demonstrate strong skills in the medium taught.

Transfer students who are planning to take ART 120 (Advanced Drawing) in their first year at Sacramento State, and who completed the required pre-requisite course in intermediate drawing at a community college, may need to contact the Art Department directly in order to enroll in ART 120, rather than register on-line or over the phone. Occasionally the computer system does not recognize that the other college's course is the equivalent of our ART 20B. Students who find themselves in this situation should contact the Art Department as soon as they are eligible to register, rather than wait for the start of the next semester.
