Art Department Advisor
Each student who declares a major in Art is assigned a faculty advisor approximately one month into the semester.  All advisors are full-time members of the Art faculty. If a student wishes a different advisor, (s)he should submit a request through the Art Department office (278-6166).  Students planning to obtain a teaching credential in Art should make an appointment with the Art Department Credential Advisor, Professor Anna Wagner-Ott (278-6443; awagner-ott@csus.edu).

Planning the Major
Students are urged to make an appointment with an Art Department faculty advisor as soon as possible.   They are required to meet with their faculty advisor at least twice: once to review their progress toward completion of the Art major, and next to get approval for the BA Degree Application.  To prepare for the first meeting, students should collect transcripts recording any college-level art courses taken elsewhere than Sacramento State and review the list of requirements for the Art major that apply for their catalogue year.   Information about transfer agreements between state universities and community colleges in California can be found on the web (www.assist.org).   Students wishing to transfer art courses not listed on the website or taken at institutions with which there are no articulation agreements should provide documentation of the contents and requirements of the courses (catalogue description, syllabi, etc.)    In some cases, a portfolio of work done in the other college’s art classes also may be required to determine their equivalency to the Sacramento State classes.

Meeting the Faculty Advisor
During the first meeting, the Art faculty advisor will review the student’s transcripts and prepare an “Art Major Advising Sheet” listing all Sacramento State Art classes and any transfer classes from other institutions (there are three versions: Art Education, Art History, and Art Studio).   A “Major Advising Record” with a summary of the student’s progress in the major also may be compiled at this time.  This form, kept in the Art Department office, must be completed by a certain deadline or a hold will be placed on the student’s academic records (the deadline is stated in a letter sent to each student).

Preparing for Graduation
One year prior to graduation (November 1 for the Fall; May 1 for the Spring), each Art major should obtain a Bachelor’s Degree Application Form from the Outreach, Admissions and Records website.  Using the “Art Major Advising Sheet” as a guide, (s)he will compile a list of all Art classes that are being applied towards the major, whether taken at Sacramento State or elsewhere, and whether completed (with final grade), in progress, or yet to be taken.  This draft should be reviewed with the Art faculty advisor.  If all of the information is correct, the advisor will sign the form (the Department chair’s signature also may be required). After having the form copied in the Art office, the student will take it to the Student Service Center in Lassen Hall and pay the fee ($43.00).

Art Department Advisor
Each CSUS student who declares a major in art is automatically assigned a faculty advisor approximately one month into the semester. If the student wishes a different advisor, (s)he should submit a request to the Advising Coordinator through the Art Department office (278-6166). Students planning to obtain a teaching credential in art should make an appointment with the Art Department Credential Advisor, Professor Anna Wagner-Ott (278-6443).

Planning the Major
Students are urged to make an appointment with their faculty advisor as soon as possible. They can prepare for the first meeting by collecting transcripts of any college-level art courses taken elsewhere than CSUS and reading the list of requirements for the art major that apply for their catalogue year. Information about transfer agreements between CSUS, other state universities, and community colleges in California can be found on the web (www.assist.org). Students wishing to transfer art courses that are not listed on the website or were taken at other institutions where there are no articulation agreements should have full documentation of the contents and requirements of the courses (catalogue description, syllabi, etc.) In some cases, a portfolio of work accomplished in the other college’s art classes also may be required.
